1. General Description

The PowerXchanger® enables the use of appliances, electronics, and other products originally designed for use in North America to be used in the rest of world. The Xchanger operates from 50 Hz power sources with nominal voltages ranging from 200 Vac to 240 Vac. It then supplies a precisely regulated 120 Vac~60 Hz sine wave at the output.

The Xchanger is completely enclosed and suitable for use in kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, garages and other areas where the environment is not well controlled.

2. How It Works

The PowerXchanger® uses a two-stage power conversion process to assure that the output voltage is precisely regulated and isolated from noise and disruptions on the input AC power source. As shown in the figure below, the input AC power is processed through an AC-to-DC power converter that assures the input power factor is as close to one as possible. This reduces the current on the input source, providing the environmentally friendly benefit of reducing the carbon emissions from the electric power provider.

The output of the AC-to-DC converter is provided an energy storage bank. The energy storage bank keeps the output load supplied with power even if the input power should be momentarily interrupted.

The output of the energy storage bank is connected to a DC-to-AC converter (also known as an inverter) that generates a pure sine wave output of 120 Vac at 60 Hz.

For clarity, not shown in the diagram are the input and output filters that limit electrical noise emitted into the input and output AC power and the input and output protection circuits.

5. Protection Functions

5.1 Output Overload Alarm

All PowerXchanger®s can indefinitely tolerate some amount of overload. If the output current drawn by the load exceeds the PowerXchanger’s over current alarm threshold (See “Overcurrent Protection Alarm Threshold” above) the white LED will blink every four seconds*. If the overload continues for more than one minute an audible alarm will sound as long as the overload is present. If the overload alarm continues for more than one minute, the Xchanger will turn off the output. After a 30 second delay, the Xchanger will turn the output on again.

* Front Panel LED Light Display only available on Designer Series

5.2 Output Overload Protection

If the output of the PowerXchanger® is loaded to more than its output overload protection threshold for more than two seconds, the Xchanger turns off the output, sounds the audible alarm, and starts blinking the white LED every four seconds*. After a 30 second delay, the Xchanger will turn on the output again. If the overload is no longer present, the audible alarm will stop, the LED will stop blinking*, and the output will operate normally. If the overload is still present, the Xchanger will once again turn off the output and wait 30 seconds before attempting to start again.

* Front Panel LED Light Display only available on Designer Series

5.3 Output Short Circuit Protection

If the PowerXchanger® detects that the output voltage is 60 Vac or less for at least 250 ms, that signals that the output is short circuited or extremely overloaded. If this happens the Xchanger will shut down and attempt to restart after 30 seconds.

The Xchanger will continue attempting to restart up to 30 times. If the overload is still present after 30 attempts, the PowerXchanger shuts down and latches off. To restore the PowerXchanger to operation, remove the cause of the output short circuit or extreme overload, then turn the input switch to OFF, wait 5 seconds, and then turn the switch to ON.

5.4 Thermal Protection

If the PowerXchanger® detects that it is starting to overheat, it will sound a sequence of 32 beeps every two seconds. For the Designer Series, a white LED will blink every two seconds.

If the Xchanger continues to overheat, it will eventually turn itself off to protect itself from damage. Once the Power Xchanger has cooled off sufficiently, it will automatically restart.

6. Visual Display

The PowerXchanger Designer Series X-15 features an LCD display of the input voltage, output voltage, output frequency, output load level and temperature.

Note 1: For example, at 50 °C ambient temperature, the maximum average output power of the X10 is 900 W. The calculation is: 1200 W – 30 W/°C × (50 °C – 40 °C) = 1200 W – 300 W = 900 W

7.2 Dust and Moisture Resistance

The electronics of all models of the PowerXchanger are sealed to protect against the intrusion of dust and moisture. All PowerXchangers are rated IP52 (protected against intrusion of dust and dripping water when tilted at an angle up to 15°).

7.3 Cooling

All units are designed to operate with natural convention cooling.

The X-5/Xm-5, X-10/Xm-10, and X-15/Xm-15 models have a fan that will operate only if needed to keep the PowerXchanger at a safe and reliable temperature.
